First Take: The Incredibles 2- still no capes, please

SYNOPSIS:

Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) is left to care for the kids while Helen (Elastigirl) is out saving the world.

For the last month, I have been carefully avoiding spoilers for this film. And I’m glad I did that, as once again Pixar are able to deliver a fantastic feature for audiences both young and old- and dare I say it, this is one of their finest works for some time.

Director Brad Bird returns to shape the film as only he can, crafting a script that literally builds upon his work from 14 years ago and adds the stylings that the guys in Emeryville have developed since then on films like Up, Inside Out and Finding Dory, and while it may be a long 1 hour 58 minutes, it feels entertaining and funny, something that a lot of cinemagoers were wanting from a film of this calibre. Once again, Michael Giacchino handles the music duties, and as ever the animation is on point- there isn’t much to fault about this film aside from a slightly predictable narrative.

Performance wise, all of the key players are back. Holly Hunter, Samuel L Jackson, Craig T Nelson and Sarah Vowell return to the fold, and with a cast of voice talent that includes Pixar veteran John Ratzenberger, Catherine Keener, Sophia Bush and of course, the director of the film returning as Edna Mode, this sequel takes everything we loved about the original, ups the ante, and delivers something truly outstanding. And being in the first public screening of it here at the local cinema is something I will always remember.

THE VERDICT

The Incredibles 2 is another masterclass in how to make an animated film for all audiences, and while it may be a PG certificate, it’s obvious why this film is going to be popular during the summer holidays- after 14 long years, we have a sequel that fulfilled our expectations.

RATING- 5/5
