First Take: Spider-Man Homecoming- it’s great to be back home.

SYPNOSIS: Following the events of
2016′s Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker attempts to balance his life in
high school with his career as the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man.

So, after years of waiting, Spider-Man is officially a part
of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the most complicated deal to explain
to ordinary cinemagoers. But even though Sony still have control over the
character, Homecoming isn’t perfect, but it is a very neat addition to the MCU.

Jon Watts has given us a 2 hour 13 minute ride that starts
off very difficultly, with a few minor pacing issues hitting the first act
hard, but once the action hits, that’s where the film excels. It’s also written
well too (by that many screenwriters that it would be impossible to list them
all), but the underlying thing is the fact that this is a different proposition
to the Sam Raimi films, or even the ill-fated 2012 reboot. The humour you’d
expect from a MCU film is here, and there is lots of it too. It’s shot well by
Salvatore Totino, and of course, whenever Michael Giacchino is providing the
score, you know you’re in for a good film.

Making his solo debut as the web-slinger is Tom Holland, who
once again excels at making the teenage Peter Parker believable and fleshed
out- obviously the majority of people will prefer Tobey Maguire’s version of
the character, but this new iteration is going to go down well with even the
most dedicated of fans. The rest of the cast are great too, with Michael Keaton
putting in some good work alongside a supporting cast that includes Marisa Tomei,
the returning Jon Favreau and lest we forget, the Iron Man himself, Robert
Downey Jr.

THE VERDICT

It’s not Marvel’s greatest film, but considering the fact
that this is a full-on reboot of an entire character, this is a strong start
for the Spider-Man character. With the standard Marvel humour alongside another
great soundtrack, this is a great stepping stone in the road to Infinity War.

RATING: 4/5
