Short Takes: Kung Fury- the most bonkers short film I’ve seen in years

SYPNOSIS:

In 1985, Kung Fury, the toughest martial artist cop in Miami, goes back in time to kill the worst criminal of all time - kung fuhrer Hitler.

Kickstarter has given us some beautiful things. And as a full on geek, I get to say that this is one of them. Bonkers, downright insane, and fuelled by a love of the 1980s, Kung Fury is a short film that simply doesn’t take itself seriously, but it is hilarious in the process.

THE VERDICT

In just 31 minutes, David Sandberg has crafted a narrative that has a sufficient amount of ‘cheese factor’ needed for something inspired by the 80′s. Add to that the fact that it is a very self-referential parody of that time period, and you have visuals of arcade machine like Transformers wreaking havoc to open the film. For a low-ish budget short, the CGI is very impressive, showing Sandberg’s background in directing adverts and music videos. But while the performances are very questionable from the cast (this is a mostly Swedish crew with the majority of lines dubbed over), this is one of those rare things that is best experienced in a group environment.

RATING: 4/5
