First Take: Trolls- this feeling cannot be stopped
SYPNOSIS:
A troll princess and her companion, the one unhappy troll try to rescue her friends from being eaten by their nemeses.
DreamWorks. A studio that’s pretty much done it all in the 16 years since Shrek was release- from Shark Tale to How To Train Your Dragon and back, they have mastered every film genre you can think of. Now they’re back with a new musical film, and it’s safe to say that they’ve created another piece of brilliance.
Walt Dohrn and Mike Mitchell have directed a very solid family film, taking Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger’s script to the screen with ease even though it feels a little too predictable at points- but family audiences won’t have an issue with this. It’s animated very well as you’d expect, with a wide colour pallette that lends itself well to a 3D presentation. The voice performances are first class, with Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick carrying the film really well for the 92 minute running time alongside Zooey Deschanel, James Corden and a sizable cast list, but where this film really stands out is the soundtrack. Christophe Beck’s score works perfectly with the songs that Timberlake himself executive produced. It’s possibly the most fun I’ve had during a kids film this year, and it is safe to say that another franchise is born.
THE VERDICT
Trolls is exactly what I was expecting from DreamWorks- another happy-go-lucky animated film that really resonates with both audiences young and old, and as I write this now, it has just opened pretty well here in the UK. If Doctor Strange is a little too heavy for your family this half term, give this a go. It’s up there with Zootropolis.
RATING: 4/5
