First Take: Pete's Dragon- Disney fail to impress for the first time in years

SYPNOSIS: the adventures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon.

Disney generally have a good eye for remakes, just look at how well The Jungle Book did back in April. But unfortunately this live action reboot of the 1977 animated classic left me feeling a little disheartened.

The main issue I had with it was the plot- sure, it follows the tried and tested Disney narrative structure of the hero’s journey, but for me it was a little too predictable at points, however, younger audiences will really identify with what seems to be a strong family film. The performances are great, with Bryce Dallas Howard leading a very good cast with ease while also allowing the younger talent to shine; this is very much evident in Oakes Fegley’s performance as Pete, as he really does steal the show in every shot he can be seen in. It’s shot very well, and the CG effects that create Elliot are some of the most realistic effects of the year so far. The film is directed very well by David Lowery, and even with these plot issues, the script he has co-written with Toby Halbrooks juggles a traditional family adventure with some minor action sequences- however, the PG rating is a little problematic, so I would advise any parent to read the BBFC’s extra information on their website before coming down to their local cinema.

THE VERDICT

Families will really enjoy Pete’s Dragon- it’s a very well made film that children in particular can really engage with, however, aside from that audience, many people will see this as another formulaic Disney film. That isn’t a bad thing, but some variation is needed here and there.

RATING: 3.5/5
