First Take: Jason Bourne- we all know his name

SYPNOSIS:

The most dangerous former operative of the CIA is drawn out of hiding to uncover hidden truths about his past.

The Bourne franchise has been a game-changer for the industry over the years- it’s made studios rethink the way they handle action scenes, and it even impacted on the more recent Bond films. Unfortunately, the new entry to the franchise is weak in comparison to the first 3 films.

The main issue with it is the pacing, as it isn’t in a cohesive structure for audiences to understand. I’m not blaming director Paul Greengrass for this, but the quick production time on the film (they only finished shooting in February of this year) does suggest that it was rushed out for a July release. Performance-wise, Matt Damon is brilliant yet again, however he is underused in this film with only 25 lines of dialogue. The real star of the show is Alicia Vikander, as she just about holds the film together alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel. The action is incredible, with the Las Vegas chase scene being by far the most gripping action setpiece of the summer. John Powell’s score keeps in with the usual Bourne style, but unfortunately the film falls short by a long way.

THE VERDICT

While Jason Bourne might be the most promoted action film of the summer, it fails to deliver on the legacy that the original trilogy has. The pacing of the film means that audiences will be engaged during a screening, but after they leave it will be another generic action film.
