First Take: Ghostbusters- never trust the internet.
SYPNOSIS:
Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.
Paul Feig has never put a foot wrong. He’s brought us Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy- 3 of the best comedies of the last few years. So when he was announced as the director of this all-female reboot, fans of the original lost their minds for the wrong reasons. They shouldn’t have done that, as he’s actually made a very good film that embodies the spirit of the 1984 classic.
It begins with a script that he has expertly written alongside Katie Dippold, as they have created a plot that is involving for both young and old audiences alike, and even the jokes are accessible too. The cast are superb, with Melissa McCarthy proving yet again why she is the most likable comedy lead in Hollywood right now, and the supporting cast of Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and a very surprising performance from Chris Hemsworth shows that the film has all bases covered. It’s shot very well, and the score from Theodore Shapiro references the classic Ray Parker Jr song that made the original so famous during most of the action scenes, and that’s even reflected in the dialogue of the film at points. This brings me to the sheer amount of intertextual references littered throughout the 1 hour 56 minutes, and there is too many to go into- from cameos to small bits of dialogue, the film has everything down to perfection, right down to some of the best CG effects I’ve seen in a film like this for a very long time.
THE VERDICT
Ghostbusters is brilliant. Paul Feig has yet another hit on his hands, and quite rightly so, as it’s obvious how passionate he is about this genre of film. It’s funny, witty and has a lot of heart- and to get that sort of response takes quite a lot. So, to the 600,000 or so people who disliked the trailer- you simply can’t judge a book by it’s cover.
RATING- 5/5
6 LAUGH TEST- Pass
