First Take: Central Intelligence- action and comedy work together in harmony

SYPNOSIS- After he reconnects with an awkward pal from high school through Facebook, a mild-mannered accountant is lured into the world of international espionage.

Let’s face it: comedy is a very difficult thing to master, and director Rawson Marshall Thurber knows that- his body of work includes Dodgeball and We’re The Millers. But, with Central Intelligence he seems to have nailed it.

The script is just brilliant, with laughs at pretty much every joke throughout the film alongside a narrative that actually has meaning. The performances are brilliant and that’s due to the perfect combination of Kevin Hart and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, as they just embody the hybridity of genres on offer in the finished product. Also, there are quite a few cameos- Aaron Paul is the only one I can give away, but there are a few gems to be had in that department. Action-wise, it’s very well choreographed, keeping the realism at a high while also making some insane moments.

THE VERDICT

Central Intelligence is one of the finest comedies I’ve seen for a long time, and that’s saying a lot. It’s very well scripted and thought out, and considering the fact that I seen this early in the morning, it’s a great way to start a day of cinematic excellence.
