First Take: Zootropolis- Disney’s newest animation hits all the right notes

SYPNOSIS: In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

Buddy cop movies are generally confined to the higher ratings- Disney Animation’s new film disproves that theory, as Zootropolis (or Zootopia as it is known to American audiences) delivers the signature charm of the animated film, while also mastering a genre that is difficult to hone.

The narrative is very finessed, easy to understand for younger audiences and allows for some brilliantly written jokes about modern society. The script is perfect, and the voice acting of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Idris Elba make this living, breathing city environment, animated beautifully by the people who brought us Frozen, look and sound realistic. Michael Giacchino’s score provides the final touches to this very well thought out film. This is a truly unique film, and it’s already identified with audiences overseas (it made $75million on its opening in the States, more than Frozen’s opening weekend) and as such, this is understandable.

THE VERDICT

If you see one film this Easter, make it this one, as it proves that you don’t need over-reliant CGI and complex narratives to make a heartwarming, brilliantly put together piece of cinema.

RATING: 5/5
