AWARDS SEASON: The Academy Awards

After a brilliant 2 months of awards season goodness, it was time to bring this year’s run to a close with the Oscars, hosted with ease by Chris Rock.

The winners

Obviously this year was the year for Leonardo DiCaprio’s win with his breathtaking turn in The Revenant, but as well as the win that we’ve been anticipating for years, the Academy stunned the bookies with Mark Rylance’s win for Supporting Actor in Bridge of Spies, another worthy win for a role that he just nails. Inside Out took Animated Feature as predicted, with Brie Larson’s role in Room also proving to be a deserving winner. Mad Max: Fury Road took home 6 awards, and quite a few people were very happy about that.

The shockers

Ex Machina beat the odds for the VFX category, as most film buffs (very smartly) had their bets firmly placed on Star Wars. However, the biggest shock came at Best Picture, when Spotlight took home the industry’s biggest accolade over The Revenant. Even Morgan Freeman was stunned when he presented it.

So there we are. Awards season is over. But it’s only just the start- we’re now heading towards blockbuster season- Batman vs Superman kicks things off later this month.
