First Take: Deadpool- Marvel's attempt at creating a self aware anti-hero hits the point perfectly

SYPNOSIS: Based upon Marvel Comics most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humour, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

For a film that has been in development for nearly 10 years, there was a lot of anxiety regarding the treatment of Marvel’s most unconventional character. I am very glad to report that Deadpool just nails every aspect that the fans are critical about- the very dark humour is there, with a brilliant screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick providing fourth-wall breaking comedy on a new level. Ryan Reynolds just plays the titular character with ease, both before and after his ill-fated cancer treatment, and Morena Baccarin, who plays Vanessa, is certainly going to become a name to look out for in the future.

It’s shot brilliantly, the music from Tom Holkenborg (better known to the music fans as Junkie XL) adds a new flavour to the tried and tested superhero score, and debutant director Tim Miller absolutely nails it. As a fan of Marvel’s output, this might be the best entry into the X-Men universe I have seen. Rulebooks are thrown out of the window to create a film that DESERVES to be seen on a big screen from start to finish. And as is the tradition, there are TWO post-credits scenes at the end. This is like a gift that keeps on giving.

THE VERDICT

Rude, raunchy and downright ridiculous, Deadpool ticks all the boxes that fans ask for, and the wait for a sequel cannot begin any sooner. Let’s just hope that Wolverine doesn’t get too involved between now and then.
