First Take (Advance Screening): Zoolander 2- a sequel that's really, really, ridiculously good looking
THE PLOT- 10 years after the events of the first film, models Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) return to the fashion industry to help stop a conspiracy to kill the world’s most beautiful people with the help of an Interpol agent and Zoolander’s own son.
So, the sequel that we all thought would never happen has arrived. Zoolander is back with an almighty bang, and this film is just comedy gold. Justin Theroux and his scriptwriting team nail the ridiculous, laugh a minute narrative perfectly, with Ben Stiller’s direction getting better with every film he does. It’s shot brilliantly by Dan Mindel, taking a lower brow next step after the epic success of Star Wars, and Theodore Shapiro’s score just adds to the ambience of the film. Performance wise, Stiller and Owen Wilson just do their thing as expected, with Penelope Cruz playing Interpol agent Valentina with ease. Also, the cameos in this film are pure gold- where else can you see Benedict Cumberbatch in drag?
THE VERDICT
Zoolander 2 may be a ridiculous plot with crazy setpieces, but who didn’t expect anything less? It takes this ridiculousness of the original to a level that makes it equal (and dare I say possibly better) than the 2001 classic.
Rating- 5/5
6 Laugh Test- passed just 23 minutes in
