The Director’s Cut: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Spoilers, obviously.

Sypnosis: Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order (led by Kylo Ren) attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance, who are also searching for a missing Luke Skywalker

So, it’s time to go in deep. The Force Awakens is a brilliant film on the first viewing, but second helpings always give a bigger impression. JJ Abrams directs it with ease, and his choice to use practical effects over CGI in many scenes creates a more realistic vision for the Star Wars universe than anything that has been released so far. Performances are spot on from newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, a pairing who I reckon could have a romance storyline in Episode VIII with their characters FN-2187, sorry, Finn, and Rey. The old team are perfect too, with Harrison Ford proving that even at his age, he can still do action, and it’s safe to say that he had a lot of input into the Han Solo death sequence. The film has been compared to A New Hope by many critics (it’s practically the same plot), but this is a great hopping on point for new fans. And it is a true big screen experience- see it in 3D if you can purely for the effects that are used when BB-8 projects the map to Skywalker.

 Rating: still 5/5
