First Take: Pitch Perfect 2- Aca awesome? No.

SYPNOSIS:

After a humiliating command performance at The Kennedy Center, the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has ever won in order to regain their status and right to perform.

I have to say that I loved Pitch Perfect 1- the humour and music combination really made it stand out at the end of 2012, and now we have the sequel. Unfortunately I have several major issues with this film.

The first is the fact that this is nowhere near as good as the original. Kay Cannon’s script is decent yet predictable at points, but it focuses a little bit too much on the serious side of the characters, something which irritated me a lot. The direction from first timer Elizabeth Banks is passable but not good, resulting in overdeveloped characters and a sense of pacing that is all over the shop. But, the performances did not suffer at all, with the whole cast putting in brilliant performances- Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson arguably keep the film interesting enough for the 1 hour 55 minute running time. The soundtrack selection is good, but just like the rest of the film, it just lacks the charm of the original.

THE VERDICT

As a whole, Pitch Perfect 2 falls short by quite a long way. It lacks the humour, wit and charm that made the first film such a success, and with a third film on the way, I don’t think it can sustain audience interest for that long.
