SMIT FILM AWARDS 2014: The best of the 20 films- equivalent to 2305 mins (or nearly 39 hours)- I've reviewed this year
It is nearly the end of another year of film, so it’s about time I began the awards season 3 months early. 20 films were reviewed during their general release this year, so they are the ones that are eligible for a Smit award. Here we go then.
Best Lead Performance- Andy Serkis as Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of The Apes
Best Supporting Performance- Ice Cube as Dickson in 22 Jump Street
Best CG/Visual Effects- Shared with Dawn of the Planet of The Apes and Interstellar
Best Screening Audience- Youth Club during screening of Get Santa
Best Comedy Moment- shared with ‘Waterslide Poo’ from The Inbetweeners 2 and ‘Nude Forest’ from The Stag
Best Soundtrack- The Awesome Mixtape in Guardians of the Galaxy
Best Score- Hans Zimmer’s music for Interstellar
Best Original Song- Everything Is Awesome from The Lego Movie
Here comes the big one.
The SMIT FILM OF THE YEAR 2014 is…
INTERSTELLAR
I knew from the moment that the BBFC black card came on screen that I would be on to a winner, and Mr Nolan didn’t disappoint. It might not have been as well received as his other work, but the scale of this film (and this is before I talk about the organ heard in the score) just blew me away. This is what I consider to be a perfect example of 21st century filmmaking.
2015: BRING OUT THE BIG GUNS
I’ll be taking a short break over new year but the reviews will return in late January, with films like The Theory of Everything, Foxcatcher, Taken 3 and many more real award nominees to come. Also, just for the hell of it, I’ll be going back to animation to review Shaun The Sheep, Big Hero 6 and others. It’s gonna be a good year, so sit back, relax and get ready for one explosive year.
