First Take Classics: Attack The Block- a film that gave us a Stormtrooper and a Doctor

SYPNOSIS: A teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion.

Film4 have had a very proven track record when it comes to supporting and championing independent British films. From the early work of Danny Boyle, to the more recent Hollywood successes, they’ve done it all- and this film from Joe Cornish (of Adam and Joe fame) adds to that legacy.

Cornish writes and directs this film with ease, as it is a very neat 90 minute film that not only has humour, but blends the science fiction genre into a setting that is so unconventional that it’s surprisingly unique and memorable. Obviously, the humour isn’t to everyone’s taste, but it is authentic considering the setting of the film, with the score from Steven Price (with contributions from Basement Jaxx) adding to that idea of authenticity. It’s shot brilliantly by Tom Townend, and considering the low budget of the film, the CG is rather good.

The cast is brilliant, with the work from John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker helping them make their names for the roles they would eventually secure in years to follow. Support is provided from some incredible British talent including Luke Treadaway, Nick Frost and others, proving once again that we have some brilliant homegrown talent. Plus, Edgar Wright was an executive producer on this film. What isn’t to like?

THE VERDICT

Unique, authentic, and a daring move for the sci-fi genre, Attack the Block has become a major part of geek culture- and it’s also become the go-to for major casting. Star Wars, Doctor Who… this is where several big careers began.

RATING: 5/5
