First Take: The Boxtrolls- WHAT IN THE NAME OF PARANORMAN IS GOING ON?
SYNOPSIS:
A young orphaned boy raised by underground cave-dwelling trash collectors tries to save his friends from an evil exterminator.
Didn’t think I’d see this at all but I was surprised in a way at Boxtrolls. It’s a very well animated film with a lot of heart, but the plot was even harder to follow than Coralline and Paranorman (the studio’s other 2 movies). Also, some of the voice acting isn’t up to my usual standard but apart from that it’s a solid film for the 8+ age group. Particular mention goes to Eric Idle for writing the song that the Boxtrolls themselves sing- I seriously wasn’t expecting that after the summer he’s had with the other Pythons.
THE VERDICT
The Boxtrolls is a perfectly fine film. It’s not up to the high standard that the studio have become known for, but once again, Laika have made a film that opens up possibilities for younger audiences to see stories that go beyond the U and PG boundaries without risking that certificate.
RATING: 3.5/5
