FIRST TAKE- Cuban Fury: For once I have to disagree with the proper critics...
SYNOPSIS:
Beneath Bruce Garrett’s under-confident, overweight exterior, the passionate heart of a salsa king lies dormant. Now, one woman is about to reignite his Latin fire.
I had high hopes for Cuban Fury but sadly, like many comedies that get heavy promotion, I left the local cinema feeling disappointed and a little bitter about how bad it got.
Sure, James
Griffiths does a good job directing it, but the issue lies mainly with Jon Brown’s script- the film has very few laughable lines but of the few that did get a reaction, not many people got the idea. It’s shot decently by Dick Pope, but the score from Daniel Pemberton (who is becoming a master at all styles of film score at the minute) made it all worthwhile.
However, Nick Frost was on form as usual, with Kayvan Novak of Fonejacker fame becoming a scene-stealer as the camp Bejan.
THE VERDICT
Overall, an OK film, but something that is shabby compared to the likes of Last Vegas and The World’s End.
RATING- 2.5/5
