First Take: The World's End- GET THE CORNETTOS OUT

SYNOPSIS:

Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from twenty years earlier unwittingly become humanity’s only hope for survival.

In 2004, Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost made a little film called Shaun of The Dead. Little did we know how they’d still be making genre-bending films in 2013, and their latest is a good film, don’t get me wrong, but compared to their previous works, well, it falls a little flat.

Wright once again delivers a masterclass in direction, with that frenetic style we’ve all come to expect from his work- and his influences are clear, from the script co-written with Pegg, to the soundtrack, the editing, and even the way the film is shot by Wright’s cinematographer of choice from Scott Pilgrim vs The World (the legendary Bill Pope). Providing the score is Steven Price, but that’s not the important bit: the humour is. And it passed the 6 laugh test very quickly. My only issue was the pacing, but not many audience members will have the same gripes as me.

The cast are brilliant too- with Pegg and Frost commanding a cinema screen as they only know how, they are able to make the film work with its unique sci-fi/comedy hybrid- and seeing an ex-Bond girl in the form of Rosamund Pike and a Hobbit (Martin Freeman) in a film like this makes for a bit of relief from the more serious pieces they do nowadays.
