First Take- Despicable Me 2: let the Minion takeover begin
SYNOPSIS:
When Gru, the world’s most super-bad turned super-dad has been recruited by a team of officials to stop lethal muscle and a host of Gru’s own, He has to fight back with new gadgetry, cars, and more minion madness.
I have never seen a film that has Russell Brand play a character that can have a family audience in stitches thanks to a mobility scooter. That’s just how good the casting people on the first film were back in 2010- now, the same creative team is back with the sequel, and it may be the best animated film of 2013.
Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud return to direct the sequel, and once again they’ve nailed it, pacing it ridiculously well for a 1 hour 38 minute film, and with Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio crafting a very good quality plot within their screenplay, the general feeling is similar to that of the first film (which I advise you should watch before seeing this) with clever little jokes throughout the film and even during the credits. It’s animated brilliantly by the team at Illumination, and with Heitor Pereira providing the score with some original songs from Pharrell Williams (one of them will get popular, mark my words), this film is off to a flying start.
Then, we have a stacked voice cast. Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Steve Coogan… I could go on- this is an incredibly gifted film in the character department, and they certainly knock it out of the park once again, taking subtle comedic tones and amplifying them for audiences both young and old.
THE VERDICT
RATING: 5/5
